BASE course
THE COURSE
In the last 10 years, hundreds of jumpers have taken our base course at Kjerag. During this time, we have developed one of the best base courses for terminal jumping in the world. The latest device we have developed for exit training is a “Pendulator”. This gives you the ability to have a very realistic base exit. You are jumping from approximately 9 meters (30 feet) and a system of ropes will catch your fall in the same way a canopy will open for real. Another thing that is very good is that you can do many exits in a very short time. In one hour you can do 10 training exits. This has improved the real exits at Kjerag 80 %.
SIGNING UP
We are running the courses on every Saturday at 9am in June, July and August, but to be sure to get an instructor, we would like you to send us a message and tell us when you would like to participate in the course. You must check in at the base club at the latest 8pm the day before.
To participate our base course you must qualify by the rules we have for jumping at Kjerag. Base-jumping is a dangerous sport and we won’t let anyone participate in our course unless they qualify; It is for your own safety that we adhere strictly to this policy.
EQUIPMENT
Many jumpers do not have specific base equipment to jump with; you will not be allowed to jump with skydiving gear at Kjerag. Stavanger B.A.S.E. klubb has invested in new base gear in 2004 which will be available to rent for those who don’t have appropriate gear to jump with.
BE PREPARED
For your own good you should adequately prepare yourself before you begin BASE jumping.
Here are some steps to get you started:
- You should practice accuracy with a big 7-cell canopy when skydiving by doing at least 10-20 jumps. There is a huge difference between flying a high performance skydiving canopy and a BASE canopy. We have seen some bad landings because the jumper did not acclimatize themselves to a bigger 7-cell canopy.
- Also practice your tracking skills, as tracking is one of the most important issues when BASE jumping high cliffs like Kjerag. The further away you are from the cliff, the safer you will be when the canopy opens.
- When coming to Kjerag you should stay about 14 days to have time to go through the course and have some jumping experience. You could be quite disappointed if you come for only a few days, have bad weather, and do not get to jump much, or even at all! The longer you stay, the better your chances of getting lots of jumps, and you will be more prepared when you go back home to challenge other objects.
- When getting into BASE jumping we recommend you to take a first aid course. BASE jumping is dangerous and can result in serious injuries or even death. A first aid course will help you or your friends in a critical situation.
- Prepare your family for your BASE jumping career. Explain to them what you are doing and why, make sure they understand your wishes in case of emergency, such as “do not resuscitate” or “donate organs”, and it is also a good idea to have health and life insurance. A living will is also a good idea, so in case the worst happens; your wishes will be known and carried out.
- BE PREPARED for the most exhilarating experience of your life! The freedom of leaping off a cliff cannot be truly described, but is understood and loved by BASE jumpers around the world. Be prepared to never be the same again.
